Charity of the Month

September 2010

September...  A month of change, the beginning of Autumn, a return to school and football, the last gasp of Summer and the celebration of bald women....wait a minute...WHAT!?   You got it.  BALD WOMEN.  46 of them to be exact. We are so proud to announce that our Charity of the Month for September is 46 Mommas. These are rockin’ cool mother tigers who say to hell with curling irons, blow outs, and bangs....these women have more important things to do to get your attention.  Their children need your help.  In fact, their children could be your kids and they all need our help!   Their name says it all. They are a group of 46 moms of children who have fought or are fighting cancer and their goal is to make a difference, to get the message out there that kids get cancer too. What better way to do that than to shave their heads and get attention for their cause.  Why 46 Mommas? On an average weekday, 46 is the number of innocent children diagnosed with cancer. Two classrooms of children whose lives will never be the same. Let’s help them raise $1 million to help find the CURE!!

Bald Mommas Rock!

While the ladies on the dynamic team come from different

parts of the country, different backgrounds, different occupations;

there is one thing that they all have in common, childhood cancer.

Help them spread the word and hit their fundraising goal.

No donation is too small (or too big).  While you visit their site,

check out the children they are honoring. These are the children

they are mommas to and their very reasons for doing this.

During this entire month, we will donate 8.13% of all proceeds to

46 MOMMAS, as well as feature additional ways we can all support

their awesome mission...starting here:  In addition

to our standard donation, we will be offering our

Flower Power Mommy Necklace for just $46 dollars (normally $52)

and our exclusive Devon’s Feather Bracelet in 46 Momma Green!!

for just $38 in silver or $42 in gold vermeil.  We are honored

to bring  you this important organization  as our Charity of the Month.

St. Baldrick’s:  On March 17, 2000, reinsurance executives Tim

Kenny, John Bender and Enda McDonnell turned their industry's

St. Patrick's Day party into a benefit for kids with cancer. The three

planned to raise "$17,000 on the 17th," recruiting 17 colleagues to

raise $1,000 each to be shorn. Instead, the first St. Baldrick's event

raised over $104,000!

The event had a life of its own and quickly grew into the world’s

largest volunteer-driven fundraising program for childhood cancer

research! The Foundation now funds more in childhood cancer

research grants than any organization except the U.S. government.

Since 2000, events have taken place in 28 countries and 50 US

states, raising over $87 million. More than 144,000 volunteers--

including over 12,000 women-- have shaved their heads in solidarity of children with cancer, while requesting donations of support from

friends and family – each one becoming a walking billboard for the cause!   At a St. Baldrick's event, something amazing happens. People  who normally shy away from the very thought of childhood cancer find themselves compelled to support this cause after looking into the

face of these brave children who are beaming as their friends and family members proudly display their newly shorn heads. Volunteers and donors see it can be fun to support a serious cause. Young cancer patients and survivors see how many people care. And researchers see St. Baldrick's funds helping to find cures!

Commitment to the Mission

Since the first St. Baldrick’s event, five principles have directed them in their journey to Conquer Kids’ Cancer:

Integrity – The awareness of the great trust they place in us as stewards of the funds raised and as partners

with them in the fight against childhood cancer – guides them every day.

Efficiency – Their commitment to always operate in the most cost-effective manner possible so that the greatest

number of dollars raised goes directly to fund cancer research.

Transparency – Their pledge to be completely open in understanding that it is only through your support of St. Baldrick’s that they are able to continue their vital mission.

Pioneering Spirit – Their unique approach to fundraising is bold and daring, the same qualities they look for in the doctors and researchers dedicated to finding the cure.

Sense of Fun – Their head-shaving events are fun and people come back year after year, joining together to have a great time while supporting a very serious cause.
